Creating a game with Scratch

April 27, 2013

The assignment this week was to create an edutainment game using Scratch. While I appreciated this assignment and enjoyed writing with this simplified computer programming language, I wish that there was an actual application to college-level information literacy. Unfortunately I wouldn’t actually use this program with my students because it is too juvenile.

I created a game taking the player through several steps to complete a group assignment in the library. The player must move the avatar to the reference desk where they will hear the reference librarian ask how they can help the patron. They must then go downstairs to the main library stacks to get a book. Finally they must return upstairs to meet their group in the group study area. If the avatar touches any edges, they lose the game because they ‘left’ the library.
